Compelling people, gripping pictures and creative
storytelling:
For Global News anchor Carolyn Mackenzie, 38, that’s
the recipe for a great story. As the 2006 recipient of
the Edward R. Murrow Award for “Best Investigative
Journalist,” for a series on transit inaccessibility, she
immersed herself into the issue from an able-bodied
perspective in comparison to the “obstacle-filled
experience” of someone using a wheelchair. “I realized
we had a problem here,” she says of the slow
improvements to transit service. “We need to put
ourselves in other people’s shoes more often, because
when we do, we see the world differently.”
FROM STAGE TO CAMERA.
In high school, Mackenzie was passionate for both
English and Drama. She noticed that both subjects
fit well with Broadcast Journalism and pursued her
Bachelor of Journalism Degree at Carleton University
in Ottawa. Rather than acting and reading a script,
Mackenzie believes “compelling stories change lives by
inspiring action,” and is the most gratifying aspect of
her job.
MAKING CONNECTIONS.
Her involvement with Microskills, a multi-cultural,
non-profit organization for newcomers to Canada, was
inspired by mother’s experience as a Maltese immigrant.
During her childhood, a friend was diagnosed with
diabetes and Mackenzie was there for all of the signs,
symptoms and treatments. She says “sign me up” for
any charity involving children and contributes to the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. “We want the
