According to Bryk, living with her husband and three children in more than 17
different homes gave her the opportunity to test-drive different designs, colour
palettes and styles, which gave her the confidence in her career as a designer.
Bryk’s mother taught her how to swing a hammer, a skill that served her well
when budgets were tight. “Everything I learned was from my mom,” she explains
of a natural propensity to tackle home design. “We’d buy old houses, she fixed
them up.” Although she recommends homeowners leave some jobs including
electrical and plumbing to the pros, Bryk says that you can easily save by learning
a few tricks of the trade. “If you’re patient, you can paint, do your own trim work
and even tiling is a lot easier than most people think.”
