Anthony de Jager has been making wine at Fairview for 18 years . He believes in innovation , hand-crafted wines and Chenin and Pinotage .
In a place that receives a lot of sunlight , he farms by the sun and it is his best friend in the vineyard . Fairview has been making wines such as Goats do Roam and they have seen great success in the new world markets . We also tasted through Spice Route wines and enjoyed a great afternoon there . Love big bold red wines and golf ? Head to Ernie Els ’ Winery , where you can wine , dine and hit a ball right at the winery . Sip on “ The Big Easy ” named after Ernie himself . South Africa may be considered a new world wine growing region , but they ’ ve been making wine for over 350 years . Chenin Blanc is an old world grape variety hailing from the Loire region in France , and South Africa has adopted it as their signature white variety . The winemakers here are producing bottles that over perform for their price point . Spier Wine Farm is true wine destination . Eat , drink and be merry at this special place and celebrate their environmental approach at Eight Restaurant , where the ceilings and lights have been hand-crafted from old milk containers . Their fresh farm-to-table approach will win over your palate and their wines will not disappoint . In the words of Spier winemaker Johann Jordann , “ Pinotage is one of the greatest grapes in the world .” Pinotage has a large local following , and with a more rustic taste profile , winemakers have a big influence on the final wine . A wine farm is the perfect place
to experience the marriage of wine and food made right on the property . Endless exploration awaits you in the Robertson Wine Valley .
Home to over 50 award-winning wineries , I recommend to go in mid-October for the Wine on the River Festival ( or for any of their other fantastic wine festivals ). You won ’ t regret it . Relax at Laurel Cottage ( McGregor Country Getaways ), with an outdoor shower and perfect pool . Enjoy a beer or whisky tasting at Four Cousins for an unforgettable evening .
Spend a whole day relaxing at Babalyonstoren Farms and enjoy one of the best-preserved farmyards in the Cape . With over eight acres of gardens to walk through and experience , this is the perfect way to regain balance and get in touch with nature . Stay on-site in the farm hotel , wine and dine at the winery and indulge in the wonderful farm-to-table restaurants .
In a small overwater bungalow at Excelsior Estate you can taste , blend , bottle , cork and label a bottle to take home with you . Enjoy a glass of wine afterwards overlooking a gorgeous pond and horse farm , with nature all around you .
