ELLIPHANT
IN THE ROOM
WORDS BY JAY DE BELEN
Ellinor Miranda Salome Olovsdotter, or much better
known as Swedish singer and songwriter Elliphant,
is sipping on the sweetest chai tea she’s ever had in
her entire life, while sitting on a balcony in balmy
Los Angeles, California. Her voice is raspy and
textured through our Skype phone call, tinted with
her lilting Swedish accent; she sounds just as
hardened as she is in her music. It’s a pleasant
change of pace for Olovsdotter, who has been
working, touring and recording all over the globe
under her Elliphant moniker. But, she maintains
that she doesn’t really live anywhere in particular
- “my work is here, my label is here, so I’m based
here. It’s a big working camp here in LA.”
For those unfamiliar with Elliphant’s work, a quick YouTube
search will provide all the information needed. She’s worked with
some of the biggest names in pop and electronic music, namely
Skrillex, Diplo, Dr.Luke and Joel Little (famous for writing and
producing for dark-pop starlet Lorde). She’s collaborated with a
slew of musicians, both as a featuring artist and a soloist. It is only
a matter of time before Elliphant explodes on to the mainstream
music scene, and it’s looking like 2016 is the time. She could be an
electro-pop sensation, a ragga-influenced female rapper with aggressively catchy bars to spare, or a more melodic version of a punk
performer. “This whole Elliphant thing just happened! It’s crazy!”
