Folklore represents the rural culture of Kerala. Poothan is one of the attendants who comes to proclaim the presence of goddess. The word Poothan is derived from Bhootham or ghost. It comes with sharp looks like embers. It wears a belt with bells and ringing anklets. After Pooram Mulayidal (Proclamation of festival) Poothan goes to play in the houses of thattakam. It is believed that Poothan is wandering to find the Goldsmith who had stolen the Gold Chilambu of Goddess Kannaki.
