Historic sites of Chile
In the great capital of Chile, there is a large cemetery. Though it may be overlooked as just another burial ground, many of Chile ' s great leaders are buried here. It is a beautiful and well kept maze of foliage and with many beautiful gravestones. There are also the occasional monument, such as the one commemorating those who died under the dictatorship of General Pinochet, who’ s reign of terror began on September 11th, 1973 and lasted for 17 years.
Many religious symbols, such as this crucifix are left on the graves.
Pablo Neruda’ s House
Pablo Neruda, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature Pablo Neruda, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. In his life, Neruda was known as not only a prestigious poet, but also had many diplomatic positions. As an advocate for the communist party, the warrant for his arrest was put out when communism was outlawed. He was forced to flee the country. Years later, he became close to Salvador Allende, the socialist president. Upon returning to Chile to make an acceptance speech for his Noble Prize, he was invited by the president to read in front of & Neruda 70,000 people at the Estadio Nacional. The house of this great poet in Valparaiso, Chile is now a popular site visited by locals and tourists alike.
