Children's Mental Health

& Well being

Mental health problems start early in life. Half of all mental health problems have been established by the age of 14, rising to 75% by the age of 24 (GOV, 2017). This was recnetly highlighted in the childline annual review (NSPCC, 2018), where it was found that mental health and emotional health were in the top three concerns reported 2017/2018. Alongside this, the National Health Service reported that one in 8 children and young people between the ages of 5 and 19 have a mental health disorder (Department of Health, 2018).

The well being of children is just as important as their physical health. Good mental health allows children and young peole to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rouunded, healthy adults. Mostly, things that happen to children do not lead to mental health problems on their own, but certain experiences can trigger problems for children and young people who are already vunerable (Mental Health Foundation, 2016). As children's mental health can be effected by many different factors we will be exploring some of these in the next section of the guide.
