Two Doctors Proclaimed
On October 7th of this past year, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed two saints Doctors of the
Church, Sts. John of Avila and Hildegard of Bingen being the 34th and 35th Doctors of the
Roman Catholic Church. Pope Benedict made his proclamation at the beginning of the
Thirteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, in Rome. This long awaited
proclamation was met with much praise both by the thousands of believers present in
Rome at the time and fellow Catholics world wide. Yet in the midst of this, some of us were
left at the way side. Those like myself who did not understand the significance and meaning
behind the title, Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church and the history of Sts. Hildegard and.
John of Avila. The lack of my own personal understanding of this proclamation, combined
with my lack of knowledge surrounding these Saints is what led me on a quest, to find the
real significance and meaning behind being a Doctor of the Holy Roman Catholic Church.
