To that love which does not discriminate Photograhy by Dirk Kuijt madebydirk.com “Y OU KNOW, GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER - PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE.” -JUDITH LIGHT With special reference to this quote by Light, the American actress, I would like to cast some light on the double standards of those human beings, who, at one level claim to be the believers of equality and on the other hand discriminate love on the basis of gender. We know ‘like poles repel’ but, duhh?? We’re talking about humans, not magnets. What book limits love to gender? Who made this rule that only a man and a woman can tie knots? that such couples cannot procreate, but they can raise a family for sure, isn’t it? It is high time we stop criticizing them and start treating them as normal human beings and not like some “unnatural beings”. Once, POPE FRANCIS said, “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge? We shouldn’t marginalize people for this. They must be integrated into society.” Many attempts to put an end to this kind of discrimination have been made by the logical thinkers of the society and one such attempt gave birth to the LGBT community. The problem which our not-so-modern world is facing these days is that they are not ready to accept such “unnatural relationships”. We are still orthodox enough to not only criticize, but also, subjugate and make fun of people who do not discriminate in love. We raise arguments like ‘What will the society say?’, ‘Why can’t you marry a woman just like other men do, or vise versa?’ or ‘Do you not fear god?’ As per Wikipedia, The LGBT community or GLBT community, also referred to as the gay community, is a loosely defined grouping of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. This community generally celebrates pride, diversity, individuality and sexuality. It focuses on making people realize that they are no less human than the rest of the human population of the world and that they too have emotions and feel the need to be loved. Others might ask why gay marriage should be legalized, but my question is this: why should other people be able to choose who marries whom? Nobody cares if a man and a woman decide to get married and raise a family but all eyebrows are raised when we change the scenario a little bit. If a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, decide to get married, why does such chaos start surfacing? It is true Why are we still against gay, lesbian, bisexual or even transgender marriages? Well, even if you are not entirely in support of gay marriages, this adorable photoshoot of a gay couple- Earnst and Jesper- will melt your heart for sure. Just have a look at these amazing photographs. We bet you’ll love those and we would urge you all to carry this message forward that they are not unnatural 76 Vol 5 because we are the ones promoting this heteronormative assumption forgetting that there is a gap between the males and females which is occupied by these liminal human being who deserve to live respectfully. Their love is as sacred and pure as ours and so is their soul. ‘QUEER’ Is Strange. They Are Not Strange. They’re As Humans As We Are. So, They Are Not Queer.’ So, I would like to end this story with a powerful quote by Judith Butler in his book Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of identity. Butler says, “Gender is a choice, or gender is a role, or gender is a construction that one puts on as one puts on clothes in the morning, that there is a ‘one’ who is prior to this gender, a one who goes to the wardrobe of gender and decides with deliberation which gender it will be today.” Keep it in mind that gender is not an identity of an individual and certainly not something to discriminate people on its basis because gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual- they are not ‘queer people’ . They are just ‘PEOPLE’. Meenal Singh [email protected] Meenal Singh is an undergraduate student of Miranda House, University of Delhi. She aspires to be a lecturer in English Literature.
