Capturing the Perfect Moment: Ramit Batra
Ramit Batra gets in talks with GHANISHTA
ARORA over his expertise and command on some of the best functions. Here is the excerpt from the interview on a recent meet.
What inspires you? Stepping out for a photoshoot, to create something new, to out-do our own creative limits / styles / best-shots & the love that we get from our clients when they see the photographs is what inspires me.
Are you the person who catches the moment in a frame or you find yourself previsualizing the frame? It depends on the situation. If it’ s a wedding, you have to be looking for those subtle details, the backgrounds and prepare yourself to be in a position to capture a good-frame so that whenever an awesome moment happens- it can be captured instantaneously with a fabulous frame. In controlled situations like pre-wedding shoots / portraits etc.- yes, I would always pre-visualize, from the frame to the post-production effects.
What would you suggest to a photographer if the venue is poorly lit? Get a light, bro! On a serious note, either you can choose to make how the event looks & have the low-lit vibe, subtle undertones, vintage effect to it or you can use the low-lit environment as a background while using fill lights to light up the subject. It can be a difficult task, as everyone has a tendency of making the background vanish at the cost of good light on the subject.
In case your camera stops working during a shoot or a wedding, and you happen to have a good phone with a good camera, how would you play around the lights? Great question. I always have atleast 2 additional camera bodies at any given time. I am never going to ruin someone’ s wedding photographs by using a Phone to replace my professional camera. No phone can replace what a 30-40 megapixel full frame dslr with an off-camera flash using a 20-35-50-85-135 prime lens in the 1.4-1.8 aperture range can do.
Last one, how important is photoshop in your final output? Not very important. I always tell my students & second shooters- get the shot right in the camera. So the team that I work with( including myself) has a great command on White Balance, On-camera & Off-camera flash and getting the exposure right as well as making sure the frames are beautiful.
It is our habit to measure twice and click once and get the right pictures on camera. This saves us endless hours of photoshop, while having a very high quality standard.
For our commercial work- Architecture, Travel etc. We use a lot of Photoshop to merge layers and create visuals.
