the public ,” he said . “ Given its mRNA nature , I am a little concerned about some possible side effects .”
When asked if students should be given the vaccine in order to return to school , Mr . Ciaravino shared that he trusts the Archdiocese of Detroit ’ s decision-making in this scenario . Mr . Kuschel wishes to see our school life return to normal as quickly as possible , so if the vaccine speeds that process and people are choosing to — not being forced to — take the vaccine , then he supports it .
Other members of the Rice comunity had different thoughts on the matter .
“ The government chose to give it to their frontline health care providers first , so they have to be comfortable with the vaccine , giving me comfort ,” said Dean Williamson
However , when it came to students , he was more undecided due to a lack of research on the impact of the vaccine on teenagers .
As Mr . Kuschel suggested , another controversial issue is making the vaccine mandatory .
“ It ’ s a tricky situation because I
when conservative figures were banned by some social media sites after the riots in Washington , DC . Should sites known for Democratic bias have the right to remove conservatives from their platforms ? Opponents stress our right to free speech , but the platform ultimately has the final say .
Some right-leaning figures moved to sites like Parler , a free-speech app popular among hardcore conservatives . Afraid of a right-wing slant , companies like Apple , Android , Google , and Amazon banned Parler on their platforms . This not only sparked disapproval but also cast the platform to the curb .
With the riots at the Capitol weeks behind us , one question remaining is if President Donald Trump invoked violence among his supporters . This is the topic of his second impeachment trial on the Senate floor .
Parler , an app popular among conservatives , was recently banned by many of the big tech firms
Biden has chosen to stay out of the debate and to focus on his plan of unification while in office . Many on both sides
don ’ t believe people should be forced to get a vaccine , but I understand why some employers would require it , like hospitals ,” said Mrs . Zink . “ I feel like they still shouldn ’ t be requiring it , but the employer does have the right to deny work .”

Rice ’ s most well-respected faculty and students , it is clear that there is a schism between students and adults about being mandated to take the vaccine ( see poll above ).
Senior Luke Thomas is staunchly against the vaccine , fearing harmful effects and governmental conspiracy .
“ I think that you ’ ll get side effects considered this a safe move , as Biden needs to focus on the pandemic and division in the country . “ The latest impeachment would certainly divide the country more in the eyes of some ,” said Mr . Kuschel . “ Since election night when he began to question the results of the
Business Insider election , President Trump saw his approval rating slide among groups that had traditionally supported him the most . After the events at the Capitol , President Trump fell to the lowest approval ratings of his Presidency , including among his most fervent supporters .”
In his inauguration , Biden talked about the division in our country . Biden ’ s speech emphasized the “ United ” in the United States of America , showing his hope for unity . Our country is running on fumes . Let ’ s hope there ’ s a gas station just around the bend .
when you ’ re older ,” he said . “ I ’ m afraid of stuff like infertility and premature hair loss . There ’ s a lot of stuff about that vaccine that I don ’ t know about . I also don ’ t want Bill Gates to place a tracking chip inside of me .”
Senior Jake Kallabat was less polarizing , saying , “ I am not fully against it . People should take it if they want to . I don ’ t think I need to take it since getting Coronavirus is just like getting the flu . I also fear side effects .”
Senior Peter Burg was in favor of getting the vaccine in order for his life to return to normal , but he feels that the distribution is being handled poorly . He feels strongly that the vaccine should be distributed faster to more people .
Evidently , we are undecided about whether we should trust the vaccine in order to return to a normal school environment , or whether or not to mandate it . But conversations like these open us up to different ways of thinking .
Brother Rice St . Sebastian Band Captain and Senior Will Shannon put it best .
“ This is completely unprecedented and we all want to return to normalcy ,” Shannon said . “ We just have to stay positive .”
