3-Up, 3-Down: Super Bowl Ads
By Joey Farrar

One of the greatest traditions of Super
Bowl Sunday are the commercials. Every
year, people look forward to watching the
funny and creative work, and this year
was no different. Here are the best and
worst Super Bowl LIV commercials.
3-Up: Best Commercials
Jeep
This was easily one of the most funny
commercials on Super Bowl Sunday. It
was a call-back to one of Bill Murray’s
most iconic roles, in the movie “Ground-
hog Day.” In the commercial, Bill Mur-
ray continues to live the same day over
and over again with a groundhog while
driving an orange Jeep.
Hyundai
Not only was this
commercial hilari-
ous, but it also had
both a superhero
and Jim Halpert.
The commercial
highlighted Hyundai’s Smart Park abil-
ity, with John Krasinski (“The Offi ce”),
Rachel Dratch (“Saturday Night Live”),
and Chris Evans (“Captain America”)
speaking in classic Boston accents.
Doritos
Doritos only has one commercial every
year, and that commercial is always on
Bill Murray’s Jeep ad was a funny call-back to his iconic role in “Groundhog Day”
Super Bowl Sunday. This year’s was just
as funny as past years. It showed Lil Nas
X and Sam Elliot in a cowboy dance off
with “Old Town Road” playing in the
background. What could be better?
3-Down: Worst Commercials
Coca-Cola
Coca-Cola oftentimes has some of the
most funny commercials of the day, but
not this time. Any commercial featuring
Jonah Hill should be funny, but the entire
commercial was just about Martin Scors-
ese waiting for Hill to text him back.
Mountain Dew
When commercials call-back to classic
movies, it usually ends up being pretty
funny. However, I found Mountain
Dew’s call-back to “The Shining” to be
quite odd and cheesy.
Planters
Everyone around the world mourned
the death of Mr. Peanut, but then they
brought him back as a baby. Even though
the commercial featured the Kool-Aid
Man and Mr. Clean, it was a little weird
to see Mr. Peanut return as a baby.
Valentine’s is a Con to Take My Money
Welcome to “Kovel’s Korner,” where fi rst-
year teacher Mr. Kovel comments on the
next holiday.
What are your thoughts about Valen-
tine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day is the creation of the
corporate greeting card to con men out
of their hard-earned money.
this year?
I’m going to St. Ignace
to play in a hockey
tournament.
Where is your favorite
place to go on Valen-
tine’s Day?
Italia Gardens in Flint.
KOVEL’s
KORNER
What’s your favorite Valentine’s Day
candy?
My favorite Valentine’s Day candy is
red or cherry Fun Dip. Where is the best place
to take a girl on Valentine’s Day?
St. Ignace for a pond-hockey tourna-
ment.
Are you going to do anything special Are you going anywhere for Mid-Win-

ter Break?
No, I’m going to just be getting back
from the tournament in St. Ignace, so
I’m just gonna hang.
Do you do anything with family on
Valentine’s Day?
No. Valentine’s Day isn’t really a fam-
ily holiday.
Where do you think is the best place
to take a girl if you want to win her
over?
You wish you knew.
