Fresh off a loss in the championship
game in my other league, I was espe-
cially focused going into the 2017 Chief-
tain League fi nals. I combed the waiver
wires and was able to pick up a late
gem, like the Chiefs’ defense, which got
me 17 points in the last game.
Agonizing time was spent studying
matchups to make sure I was giving
myself the best chance to win. After all,
I had a championship to defend.
As it turned out, my team was facing
the team managed by my son, Tommy.
Things were intentionally quiet around
the house as the big matchup ap-
proached. You could feel the tension as
the fi nal weekend approached.
The matchup played out as it should
have, close all the way. With a single-
digit difference heading into Sunday’s
late games, I could resist no more.
“Looks like we’re going down to the
wire,” I fi nally said to Tommy.
“What are you talking about?”
Tommy replied.
“Don’t pretend like you don’t know
the exact score right now,” I shot back.
“Are you talking about Fantasy? Dad,
I deleted that app three weeks ago.”
Despite Tommy’s subterfuge, my
squad, Tik Dak Dough, pulled it out,
217.7-215.5, the closest championship in
our league’s history. It was not decided
until the fi nal game of that weekend.
Tommy’s team, Don Kelly, took three
zeroes in the fi nal weekend – two for
guys who were on injured reserve and
one for Todd Gurley, who was held out
of the fi nal game with the Rams’ play-
off matchup already determined. Some
may say I backed into the champion-
ship, but a win is a win.
I love this game.
