Take a look at different technologies,
copper free antifouling, or alternative
hull paints. AkzoNobel is looking at a
formulation of its Foul Release system –
Intersleek. It relies on movement
through the water as nothing sticks to it.
It has been used successfully on
commercial craft, but will need further
development for the leisure market. A
biocide free antifoul is the next goal, but
is probably a work in progress for the
next 10 years until the BPR are updated.
At the start of 2017, the RYA, the British
Coatings Federation and British Marine
teamed up to launch the DIY Safe
Antifouling Initiative 2017. This includes a
range of freely available resources for
reference and display, including a poster,
video, trifold leaflet and guidance document.
Thanks to the RYA, the Green Blue and Tim
Bannister of AkzoNobel, telephone 01489
785867 for advice on any problem or any
manufacturer’s product.
