1943 Born in Xiamen , China in 1943 , into the family of Rev . & Mrs Ho Yew Sam
1950 Travelled to South-East Asia with his parents and three other siblings just before China was overtaken by the Communists
1950s
Grew up in Singapore with his 7 younger siblings . He studied at the Presbyterian Boy ’ s School and learnt piano at the Royal School of Music
1962 First Arrived in Melbourne by ship to pursue further study at the age of 19 .
1960s
Studied at Monash University ( Caufield ) and graduated as a Civil Engineer . Worked in the Ministry of Housing for many years . He also had voice training and joined Melbourne Opera
1971 First met his future wife Anne in Melbourne through a mutual friend
1973 Jian and Anne were married in Singapore before returning to live in Melbourne
