Student Experience
Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and ethnicities, and around 40%
of our students are female. The school has a strong commitment to equality, diversity
and inclusion and the EDISAT committee aims to promote equality and diversity for the
benefit of our staff and students. Keele currently holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award
for its commitment in these areas.
Our staff are friendly, approachable and enthusiastic and you
join a vibrant and forward-thinking School when you become
a Chemistry student at Keele. Your development as a chemist
and general welfare is monitored by a Year Tutor, and all
students are assigned a Personal Tutor whose role is to offer
guidance on study skills, professional development and careers
opportunities as well as being a friendly face as required.
We have an active Student Voice Committee which provides a
forum for students to raise any concerns they have about the
course and work with staff to improve the course generally.
Our student Chemical Society (ChemSoc) organises a wide
range of events for all members of the School including parties,
an end of year ball and sporting activities such as student-staff
football matches.
International Year
Studying abroad for a year allows you to expand your horizons and experience a new culture,
popular countries include, Canada, USA, Australia and Japan.
Our BSc Chemistry and MChem and Chemistry with Medicinal
Chemistry degrees can integrate an International Year which
allows you to study at one of our overseas partner institutions
in Year 3 of study before returning to complete your final year at
Keele. Admission to this programme is at the end of the Year 1
and subject to meeting academic requirements and application
to our Study Abroad Programme.
At the partner institution you will study a range of chemistry
modules which will complement the Keele Chemistry
programme and include the option to select electives, further
broadening your experience. In addition half of your time will be
spent undertaking a placement which might be carrying out an
independent research project, working in industry or working in
a school.
Industrial Placement Year
You can improve your career prospects by integrating and industrial work.
During Year 2 we will support you making applications to
industrial companies to gain a position on their salaried
undergraduate placement schemes. Placements are integrated
into your degree between years 2 and 3 after which you return
to the university to complete your studies. Companies which
students have been successful in being awarded a placement
are AstraZeneca, AkzoNobel, Lubrizol and Sanofi.
