BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF WALES
MOZART
Projected into a large screen
with live orchestral accompaniment.
Thursday 8 March 2018, 7.30pm, Cheltenham Town Hall
Possibly the highlight of our 17-18 series
is the visit of one of the great polymaths
of the modern international classical
scene – pianist, composer, writer and
painter, Stephen Hough. He performs
one of the sweetest and most Italianate
of 19th century piano concertos (but
also one of the most brisk and dazzling):
Mendelssohn’s G minor concerto, which
is sure to be a rare treat for Cheltenham
audiences.
The Hough-Mendelssohn combination
is preceded by four symphonic poems
Dvořák wrote late in life (1894), based on
the gruesome fairy tales of Karel Erben.
The Golden Spinning Wheel is a first-rate
example of the composer’s attention to
bloodcurdling detail, with almost every bar
relating to the original story. Finally, the
marvellous closing statement of this superb
concert is Brahms’ C minor Symphony
(complete with its soaring final movement
melody), over which the composer
agonised for around 15 years, and which
signalled his escape from the shadow of
Beethoven.
CONDUCTOR: PHILIP MACKENZIE
Carnival of the animals
Performed with lots of extras and fun surprises
including poetry by Ogden Nash and others,
terrible Christmas jokes from the conductor’s
podium and wonderful cartoon animations
projected onto a screen above the orchestra.
