ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Thursday 21 September 2017, 7.30pm, Cheltenham Town Hall
Prokofiev’s lyrical Classical Symphony, one of
the most popular and accessible works of the
20th century, opens the new Concert Series
at Cheltenham Town Hall in energetic and
inviting fashion.
The evening’s centrepiece is one of the most
challenging concertos in the repertoire –
Tchaikovsky’s mighty B flat minor Piano
Concerto, performed by Dublin-born Finghin
Collins. This sparkling Russian gem blends
Ukrainian folk themes, French song and a
grandiose and much-loved opening melody to
triumphant effect, and was the first classical
recording ever to sell over 1 million copies.
Dvořák’s Symphony No.7 perfectly balances
dramatic power and irresistible exuberance.
With its arresting opening, gorgeous slow
movement, dancing Scherzo and thrilling
Finale, it is one of the greatest pieces Dvořák
ever wrote.
Pre-Concert Talk (6.30pm to 7pm):
Presented by a member of the RPO team.
Free entry using your ticket for tonight’s
concert.
