THE THEFT

The tranquil night was silent, a silence so heavy and thick it was

almost a sound. It was also black, pitch black. So black the moon

had run across the starless sky and hidden cowering behind the

dark distant clouds. In other words it was the perfect night for

a theft...

A man, coated in black, crept stealthily through the ominous shadows. He glanced up at the huge manor he was planning to rob, it was owned by a rich elderly gentleman, in the eyes of this particular thief an easy prey, unfortunately though the only windows were about twenty meters above the ground, making a break in difficult. He examined the building more closely, running his hands along the large blocks of stone as he looked up and walked around the huge building. Finally, he spotted a drain pipe, realizing it was the only way in he grabbed it and began to pull himself up.

Soon, he was level with the glass window. With the agility of a cat, he jumped onto the windowsill landing with his feet on the bottom one and his strong hands holding tightly onto the top one.

Slowly, he removed one hand from the windowsill and reached carefully into his pocket to get out a small dagger. Then, using this dagger he cut a square in the cold windowpane and meticulously, by putting the handle of his dagger into his mouth and using his hand that wasn’t still holding onto the windowsill, he managed to push it out. Then, with his knife still in his mouth and the piece of cold glass in his sweaty hand, he jumped soundlessly through the gap in the glass into the dark, what seemed like storeroom. He looked around cautiously. Then suddenly, his hand slipped, the glass fell faster than lightning and smashed to the ground shattering like a broken heart.

The man’s panic rose almost as fast as the glass that had just fallen. He heard movement in the house and what sounded like a dog barking. His panic rose higher. Rapidly, he grabbed the first thing he saw. He ran to the window, looking over his shoulder to see the door begin to open. He jumped out and shimmied down the drain pipe. As he landed on the glass covered ground, gunshot split the night making a few crows fly up into the sky, cawing menacingly. He turned and ran off into the black...
