Fantastic Illustration from the Korshak Collection
November 17, 2017–February 4, 2018 | Leslie and Johanna Garfield Galleries
A vision of the fantastic, this exhibition explores the ever-evolving visual landscape of science fiction
and fantasy literature. Featuring original artwork by American and European artists spanning more than
a century, these vivid illustrations bring to life adventures, beings, and worlds conjured in novels such as
Don Quixote and Tarzan, and pulp magazines including Amazing Stories, Weird Tales, Fantastic Adventures,
and Wonder Stories. Accomplishing far more than simply guiding readers in their explorations of new
and sometimes bizarre realms, the range and impact of these illustrations is far-reaching.
Gustaf Tenggren (American, b. Sweden, 1896–1970), Kärlekens under (“Love In”), 1922,

Art History Curatorial Studies
February 9–April 8, 2018 | Oscar F. and Louise Greiner Mayer Gallery
For this exhibition, students enrolled in Introduction to Museum Studies: Theory & Methods examine historic ceramic
vessels and their technologies, artistry, and meanings. Specifically, their work will highlight molded Victorian jugs,
vessels that were some of the highest-quality and most-popular and ubiquitous forms of the mid-nineteenth century.
These objects cross several important areas of study, including Victorian art and design, ornament drawn from
popular culture (heroic myth, literature, history, and botanica), and improving technologies of molding. The jugs were
praised and critiqued in art and design journals and, at their best, reached some of the pinnacles of decorative art.
Members of the curatorial studies class discuss the selection of molded jugs for the exhibition.
