Facility Square Footage Square Footage Level of Service benchmarks are calculations of the minimum amount of indoor space recommended to provide all indoor recreation activities. It also includes considerations for specific facilities recommended to support programs and activities. Level of Service (LOS) guidelines for indoor space is less established than the guidelines for parks and open spaces, but the planning team utilizes a Chicagoland benchmark of two square feet per person with 1.5 square feet consisting of indoor classroom-based or active recreation space and 0.5 square feet consisting of indoor aquatics. In addition to the deficit in indoor recreation and program space, the City of Lake Forest is lacking indoor aquatics. The City has no indoor aquatics facilities but the Chicagoland benchmark recommends 0.5 square feet per person. In terms of square footage, the City of Lake Forest has a 9,687.5 square foot deficit of indoor aquatic space. The Department has a total of 20,661 square feet of indoor recreation space and 2,457 square feet of single-use space. According to the indoor square footage level of service analysis, the Department has a total public indoor level of service of 1.2 square feet per person. Compared to the Chicagoland benchmark of 2.0 this is 0.8 square feet per person below the benchmark and a deficit of 5,944.5 square feet. When considering combined recreation, program, and aquatic indoor space, the City has a total deficit of 15,632 square feet compared to Chicagoland benchmarks.
