A Winning Hand for 2027

By Elizabeth Johnson
Clear the calendar and gather your favorite foursome. On a Sunday afternoon in January, the tables in Matthews will be set, the tiles will be clicking, the cards will be shuffling, and dessert will never be far from reach.
Hadassah Charlotte Metro’ s fourth annual Mah Jongg and More Game Day returns Jan. 24 for three hours of friendly competition, the very best of company and a little strategic maneuvering. From one to 4 p. m., Mah Jongg may command plenty of the tables, but it is hardly
the only game in town. Canasta, Rummikub, Scrabble and just about any other game players care to bring are all part of the afternoon.
No foursome? No problem. Come with a table of regulars or arrive looking for a game. Just indicate what you play when registering, and organizers will put their matchmaking skills to work. You may arrive one player short and leave with a whole new roster of opponents. And despite what the Mah Jongg tables of America might suggest, this is hardly a ladies-only affair. Spouses, partners and male friends are very much invited to join the livery.
Tickets are $ 54 per person and include beverages and a dessert bar to keep players well-fortified between hands. Off the game table, there are exciting door prizes and a silent auction worth keeping an eye on. Among the offerings: a weeklong escape to Hilton Head Island, with its miles of Lowcountry beaches and easygoing coastal pace; an in-home wine tasting for 12 with PRP International Wines; a Mah Jongg basket stocked with

playing essentials; gift cards and more.
For Mah Jongg players, January also means it is nearly time to retire the old card. Hadassah Charlotte Metro is accepting orders for the official 2027 National Mah Jongg League card. This year, standard-print cards are $ 16 and large-print cards are $ 18.
Proceeds from Game Day and the chapter’ s 2027 Mah Jongg card sales will benefit Hadassah programs, including its hospitals and Youth Aliyah villages. So, whether you come for the tiles, the competition, the sweet treats or the chance to bid on a week at one of South Carolina’ s best beaches, there is one thing everyone at the table can agree on: this is a hand worth playing.
