Construction on French Prairie winds down

For most Charbonneau residents , especially those in the construction zone , the end of the sewer / storm
SWITZER drain / water pipe replacement project is a welcomed sight . Salem based K & E Excavating was the city ’ s contractor to replace the 30-year-old pipes under French Prairie from Village Green Circle to Country View Lane . The project also included work on Village Loop and Old Farm , as well as Edgewater Place .
Making the disruption tolerable was the work and professionalism of the company ’ s two flaggers , Jaimie Gustin and ShaChyira Winters . From the very first day , these two women made an impact on the residents affected by traffic delays , noise , dust , and even mud . At the time of this writing the project is winding down , with only some curb and gutter work and striping to go . If anyone has driven through the area or walked by , it is hard not to notice ShaChyria ’ s infectious smile and easy demeanor . When she first started in June she came in with no expectations , but was immediately taken aback by how nice everyone was .
“ On my very first day , I was talking to a woman who lived right where I was working . As it turned out , I needed to use the restroom , which was a porta-potty about 300 yards away ,” she said .
What she did not expect was to be invited into a home to use their bathroom .
“ I had been talking to her for all of five minutes and she invites me into her home ,” she added .
Jaimie , who spent most of her time near the golf maintenance yard and Country View Lane , cites similar examples of Charbonneau residents going out of their way to be kind .
“ There has not been a day that someone has not offered a snack , a cool drink , or a kind word ,” she said .
Jaimie stocked up on dog treats after the first few days and it did not take long for her “ fur babies ” to find her .
“ I have pictures of some of them on my phone . When I am home and need a laugh , I just look at them and smile ,” she added .
Jaimie was familiar with the area since her mother lived here for a short time in the early 2000s .
Born in Eastern Washington , her and her husband raised two children in the Stayton area .
“ I was a stay-at-home mom , which I loved . As the kids got older , I decided to go to work ,” Jaimie said .
After 13 years with K & E , she has not looked back .
“ I love this company . They are an amazing firm to work for ,” Jaimie said .
ShaChyira echoed her sentiment .

“ When I am out here , I am the face of the company . That is important to me ,” ShaChyira said .
ShaChyira is from Salem and raised two daughters there .
“ I wanted to express to everyone here in Charbonneau what a joy it was to spend the summer here . People were kind , patient and considerate . It was fun to come to work every day and I will miss it ,” ShaChyira said .
As a former corrections officer at Coffee Creek , she had a keen eye for people out of place .
“ There was a young woman that passed through several times . You could tell that she did not belong and was acting very suspicious ,” ShaChyira said .
After the fourth time through in a very short period , ShaChyira called property manager Rick Schram to report the issue . Rick notified both Wilsonville Police Department and our Security Firm , First Response , to keep a look out for the vehicle .
“ I took a picture and sent it to Rick ,” ShaChyira said .
Rick was appreciative of their efforts and it is now on file with First Response .
Most of the residents affected by the construction got to know the two women pretty well .
“ I got spoiled by the homemade scones and addicted to Jamba Juice ,” smiled Jaimie .
“ By far , this has been my favorite job in 13 years with the company ,” said Jaimie .
Despite the two days of strong winds and falling branches followed by poor air quality days from the fires , both women leave with great memories of their time in our community .
