Refl ecting on personal treasures in March
On March 17 we celebrate St . Patrick ’ s Day and all things Irish . We talk about the luck of the Irish or we mention the treasure that is to be found in a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow .
WIESENTHAL During a recent trip to Ireland , one of my goals was to see The Book of Kells . Why ? It is an illuminated manuscript believed to have been created about 800 B . C ., stolen and buried , only to be unearthed by a lucky farmer who recognized it as something valuable and took it to the local monastery .
Why is it called an illuminated document ? The text is calligraphy and its illustrations are in magnificent detailed with gold paint and colors that can no longer be made . The manuscript takes its name from the Abbey of Kells , which was its home for many

centuries . It is regarded as one of Ireland ’ s finest national treasures and is now housed for safe keeping at Trinity College Library in Dublin . The manuscript is under glass and the light is kept low . When viewing it we must stay at a distance . The Book of Kells is certainly kept safe .
What do we house for safe keeping ? What are our treasures ? My family and friends are my treasures . I keep them safe by staying at a distance and wearing a mask when in the store .
Although we at Boys and Girls Aid are not out and about , we are still giving our treasures of time , energy and substance to the work of the children this marvelous organization supports . We do this at a distance believing that eventually we will be together again for our meetings and luncheons .
At a recent Zoom luncheon meeting , Dr . Suzan Huntington told us about one of our treasures . His name is Alex . Before coming to Boys and Girls Aid , this teenage boy had been through the unimaginable . He had been in more than 12 foster homes and was understandably confused and angry and had behaviors that matched . Never knowing where he would be the next day , he believed that he was unloved and unwanted . He certainly did not feel safe .
But through the work of Boys and Girls Aid and Wednesday ’ s Child on KOIN , the Madkours saw Alex as valuable and knew what a treasure he was and what a treasure he ’ d be to their family . So they adopted him and they love him and he loves them . He is
