CCC President ’ s Column

By GENE TISH

Celebrating the community ’ s accomplishments

“ Vincit Qui Se Vincit .” This Latin phrase has been interpreted to mean , “ Conquer ones self and you conquer
TISH all .”
As we look back at the difficulties imposed by 2020 , and even acknowledging that at its best , 2021 will likely suffer from a serious 2020 induced hangover , it is important to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments we made as a community .
This reflection should provide hope , inspiration and confidence in our ability to make the best of whatever tomorrow might bring .
A challenge to your board by a
small dissident group of residents who called for a special membership meeting held in January of 2020 united our community in a way no one could have fully imagined . The energy and unity emanating from that meeting should continue to inspire our community for years to come .
A solution to the longstanding issue of uniting the community with its golf course was found by focusing on the “ interests to be protected ” and working collaboratively to find ways to respect all of those interests , rather than wasting energy arguing “ positions ” and drawing lines in the sand .
The increased assessment for capital improvements that took effect in 2020 enabled negotiation of a loan for construction of the new Activity Center which will break ground this spring , with a planned completion date near the end of 2021 .
The increased assessment for capital improvements that was passed in 2020 and will take effect in 2021 , will enable loans for partial renovation of the old clubhouse to facilitate a restaurant ( 96 % support at the August virtual community forum ), and an allweather pickleball facility ( 82 % support at the August virtual community forum ), if the board determines to go forward with those projects following
additional study and plan development . But most importantly , at least from my perspective , this last increase will support the maintenance of a fiscally prudent balance in the capital improvement fund going forward .
Bringing the golf course and the community together and putting in place an assessment level that could adequately support needed revitalization of our community were my primary reasons for stepping up and engaging in community leadership . I am satisfied that both now enjoy a sufficient foundation on which to build for the future . Recognize a need . Visualize a solution . Advocate for change . For me , personally , it was nearly three years of focused hard work that helped facilitate 2020 becoming a year of accomplishment for our community . But overall , it was a team effort supported by hard work and personal sacrifices on the part of many , many residents .
As we look forward to 2021 , I encourage each member of our community to look forward with hope to the year ahead , inspired by what we have accomplished , and with confidence in what we , as a community , can achieve .
On another important note , my appreciation
for Martinis increased dramatically after reading a column in the Villager over 20 years ago . I am embarrassed that I cannot recall the name of the author , but as I do recall , he was a gentleman whose work took him to San Francisco on a periodic basis . He reported that he was frequently drawn on those trips to a particular establishment because of their Martinis . After some time , he was able to coax the secret from the bartender — the addition of a couple drops of bourbon or scotch to “ open up the drink .” I enjoy a British-style Martini , three parts gin or vodka to one part of dry vermouth . Since for “ parts ” I use ounces , it makes a pretty good drink . But they have never been the same since I read that column and started adding a quarter teaspoon of bourbon or scotch ( I prefer using scotch ).
So , what about the “ Vincent Qui Se Vincent ” line at the beginning ? It is simply intended as a parting word of advice — a reminder that the predictability of success for every challenge we undertake is largely determined by our own ability to maintain our focus , in spite of incoming and / or friendly fire and to complete the hard work required .
Happy New Year .

Solo Sisters

By CANDY FERGUSON

Welcoming the year 2021

We are happily facing a new beginning as 2021 replaces 2020 and we begin the year with renewed optimism , but many of the old problems . Happy New Year everyone !
As for me and this Solo Sisters column , it is time for an ending . I am no Jerry Seinfeld and cannot continue to
write about nothing ! So until the Solo Sisters get to attend their first happy hour of 2021 , this column will go silent . My thanks to the wonderful Charbonneau community for their support , and ( one final plug here ) if you are a single woman looking for a safe place to meet other single women , please
consider joining us when we start again . Feel free to send your contact information to Deanna Morgan at deannamorgan @ gmail . com and you will be added to our mailing list .
See you in the spring or summer or ( God forbid ) the fall ! And get vaccinated !
