always believed kindness is at the root of love and that it is expressed in how we treat others .
A study cited by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America ( PNAS ) supports the residents ’ theories . It found the more someone receives or witnesses kindness , the more likely they were to be kind to others , which leads to upward spirals of love .
Wilma Sheridan , a longtime Spring- Ridge resident , credits the compassion of people in her life with broadening her thoughts on love . She said , “ My views on love have grown from new experiences that add more dimensions to the basic emotion . Throughout the years , the kind acts of others have increased my understanding of love . And now , in my ‘ golden years ,’ I experience golden memories of one who brightened every day by saying , ‘ I love you .’”
Couple Glenn and Shirley Slack have also found their views of love change throughout their 52-year marriage , saying : “ Love helps you through life if you nurture , understand and enjoy all the different pleasures of it . Love is like the ever-changing wind : hot , warm , cool and sometimes downright chilly . Love has definitely made our life and marriage more fulfilling .”
Still , for others at SpringRidge , the word has changed and meant different things as they moved through the various stages of their lives — from being a young adult to parenting and careers and retirement .

said Val Schmitt . “ As I ’ ve matured , I ’ ve come to realize that ‘ being in love ’ comes and goes but true love is much more than that . True love means I care enough about someone to sacrifice for them .”
Vera Dubenko shares Val ’ s evolving definition of love : “ I have learned through experience and with many years of living that love is not just a feeling , but a daily choice .”
Fellow resident Sharron Morris also includes her faith in how she defines the emotion . “ My love is expressed through scriptures , including ‘ Love puts up with all things and endures all things ’ and ‘ Now faith , hope and love remain , and the greatest of these is love .’”
Marcia McQuestion says love for her has grown from experiencing it as a child to giving of her time as an adult to receiving love from her family . As a U . S . Navy veteran , she also includes a love for town and country when describing how love has transformed over time .
In addition to romantic love and the love shared with their families , Spring- Ridge residents also value friendships and the positive impact their neighbors have on bringing joy and happiness to their lives .
“ Love is a large heart-shaped container we continue to fill with caring , sharing and all kinds of goodwill ,” said Chris Raish . “ The more people we know , the more our heart grows . And that love from our friends is the kind that never ends .”
