A day for family get-togethers

Charbonneau moms talk about the significance of Mother ’ s Day

BY COREY BUCHANAN

For Angela Greene , Mother ’ s Day meant waking up to a freshly-made breakfast at the foot of her bed and a hug from her kids . For Lynn Olson , it means spending more time with the parents who already live close by — as well as their kids and grandkids of their own .

But both Charbonneau residents look forward to the holiday and for the chance to give and receive appreciation

from their families .
“ I think every mother feels Mother ’ s Day is a special day and we all appreciate being appreciated like we did for our mothers . It goes around ,” Greene said . “ The next generation will remember the special things done for them and hopefully will continue it on .”
Greene grew up in the Los Angeles area and recalls bringing breakfast to her mom in bed . As a mom of five kids , her children would do the same thing for her . The eggs may have sometimes been cold , but the intention was not .
As for gifts , she ’ ll often receive a bouquet of flowers and See ’ s candy . Though she no longer lives in the same house as her kids , most of them live in the Pacific Northwest and they are planning a get-together this year .
And the holiday reminds Greene of her own mom , who passed away two decades ago . Greene said her mom was always there for her — including when she was in need of a ride to the hospital when she was in labor .
“ She was always around no matter what . You could always count on her for whatever ,” Greene said .
Olson had not lived with her parents since she was 18 until they moved to Charbonneau nearby her home . Now , she enjoys running into her

Olson described her mom as her best friend . Being both a daughter and a mom has been a special experience , she added .
“ I was the youngest and the only daughter , so I was pretty spoiled . Mom went everywhere with me growing up . We spent tons of time together laughing . We ’ re super close ,” she said .
Though Olson said Mother ’ s Day wasn ’ t a big holiday growing up , they celebrate it now with both her kids and her parents .
“ It ’ s another excuse to get together with family and see everyone . Everyone is always so busy with work , their own kids . It ’ s nice for everyone to take time to be together ,” Olson said .
For Olson , gifts aren ’ t the main purpose of the day .
“ It ’ s a gift to be together and spend time together ,” she said .
