Wilsonville ’ s DEI Committee begins work

BY DIANE IMEL
Wilsonville ’ s Diversity , Equity and Inclusion Committee ( DEI ), formed last summer , is composed of 13 community members with a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences . The committee encompasses different genders , ethnicities , abilities , religions and orientations .
We understand how important it is to feel a sense of belonging in our community and we are committed to action that makes everyone in Wilsonville feel welcome here . Our focus is on removing barriers — physical , language , financial , or otherwise — in order to give everyone equitable access and opportunity . We want to create connections that bring people together to engage , learn and grow a diverse and inclusive community .
We are now in the process of turning ideas into long-term strategies and short-term goals . Among our first initiatives is expanding the city ’ s Juneteenth celebration , a new event that debuted last year to commemorate the emancipation of slaves . We ’ ve also engaged in conversations with the Parks and Recreation and Planning Departments about how we might work together to ensure that programs , events and policies are viewed through an inclusive lens .
As discussed in the city ’ s Boones Ferry Messenger , the committee hosted small focus groups throughout April . This included a survey and other tools that will help the committee gather additional perspectives on what can and needs to be done . We are eager to hear from you and to understand what is important to you so we may amplify your voice and advocate for ideas that make Wilsonville a better place . To quote an African proverb , “ If you want to go fast , go alone ; but if you want to go far , go together .”

Turning attention to future Event Center

In the summer of 2019 , the CCC Board conducted an extensive survey and community outreach program to determine the future needs of our
SWITZER community . The
board was able to look at usage of the clubhouse and was even surprised that about 30,000 people came through the doors each year . Those events , of course , led to the construction of the new Activity Center addressing the needs of the various clubs and organizations that were using the clubhouse .
As we celebrate the opening of the AC , the board has turned its attention to the clubhouse . Built in the 1970s it is no doubt showing its age . We began an assessment of the structure early last year and have already begun the process of not only updating the building , but reviewing what the future “ Event Center ” should look like . The cover for the walkway was removed since it had become structurally unsound . The siding is also scheduled for replacement , as well as some of the windows .
The Event Center Committee , chaired by Kathy Harp , will continue to work hard on plans for the facility . It may require an additional outreach program to see what the community wants moving forward . As we get into the rhythm of utilizing our new building , those needs will become more evident . In 2019 there was a strong desire in the community for us to convert the clubhouse into a restaurant and banquet room . We have not abandoned that idea , but do want to take this time to reevaluate the current market and operational requirements needed for that endeavor . Doing it right and taking our time is a proven strategy that the CCC Board will continue to adhere to . We will continue to keep you up to date not only in the Villager , but on the website as well .
