Our summer reading program begins this month
The big library is having a great spring into summer — and how are you faring ? Good news ! Clackamas County is now 100 %

thanks to a whole lot of late ( and also early ) rain . Celebrate by having an extra glass of water at home , or just come here to the library , where our fancy water fountains will also inform you just how many plastic bottles they have selflessly diverted from the landfill !

Have you noticed the strange coincidence that several months this year have all started on the first ? And June is no exception ! Luckily that ’ s the same day that the library ’ s public programs begin as well ! At 11 a . m . Wednesday , June 1 we ’ re presenting ( via Zoom , online ) a nonpartisan program called ‘ Beyond Voting ’. Attendees will learn a whole lot about several topical issues , including the right to vote , election security , voter suppression and voter turnout as well as getting more people to vote , redistricting / gerrymandering , the Electoral College , alternative voting systems and campaign finance issues . The program will be presented by Donna L Cohen , MLIS , MEd , and you can sign up via the link on our website .
Also on the premier day of June , our wonderful Summer Reading Programs begin . There ’ s a Summer Reading Program for you , regardless of your age . This year ’ s theme is ‘ Read Beyond the Beaten Path ’. There will be prizes and fun for all — find out the particulars on our website and stay tuned for a few June events ...

At 6 p . m . on Friday , June 3 ( the first Friday ) we present the latest entry in our recently-reconstituted First Friday Film Series . This month , it ’ s a documentary about a summer of soul . In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker , Ahmir “ Questlove ” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary — part music film , part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history , culture and fashion . Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969 , just 100 miles south of Woodstock , The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park ( now Marcus Garvey Park ). The footage was largely forgotten — until now . It features concert performances by Stevie Wonder , Nina Simone , Sly & the Family Stone , Gladys Knight & the Pips , Mahalia Jackson , B . B . King , The 5th Dimension and more . The film won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival . Join us !
As previously mentioned , our Summer Reading Programs start this month ! And as usual , we ’ ve got several enjoyable activities around this pleasant time of year . Even better , this year we don ’ t have to do it online !
On Wednesdays , June 22 and 29 at both 11 a . m . and ( a repeat at ) 2 p . m ., we ’ re featuring Camp Science , an activity chock-full of fun science-related activities including the thrill of table top science and even a pop-up science demo ! It will be held on the Children ’ s Patio beneath the lovely summer sunshine !
Also on Wednesday , June 22 , at 2 p . m ., we have a cool event for teens in grades six through 12 . We ’ ll kick off Teen Summer Reading with the return of the biggest water fight in Wilsonville ! Plus games , prizes , popsicles , and an exploding watermelon ! Be there or be entirely square , dude !
On Thursday , June 23 , at 11 a . m ., join us outdoors at the Grove Shelter ( in Memorial Park ) for our first Thursday Fun Show ! Help us welcome Angel Ocasio , who blends physical comedy , jokes , juggling , balancing , magic and improv ! Angel brings a bilingual variety show that is perfect for kids of all ages .
