Remembering those who fought for our freedom

Hello Charbonneau residents . The theme of this edition is patriotism . We celebrate the
NEWBORE Fourth of July , Independence
Day , with BBQs , fireworks , etc ., but let ’ s all take a moment over the holiday to remember all the men and women who fought to bring us independence and those who fought to keep it . We are all very lucky to be living in the United States and have our freedom .
It is very rewarding to see the village humming with people . With the opening of Gather + Give , a charcuterie ( appetizers ) shop , and the reopening of the golf course restaurant , The Market Café at Charbonneau , we now have four places where one can get an adult beverage and food . Coupled with a new , pleasant place to work out and hang out at the new Activity Center we are drawing an increasing number of people to the Village Center , which has been one of our longtime
board goals . We are also in the very early thought stages of adding attractions to our Event Center ( old clubhouse ).
The annual Charbonneau Country Club homeowners meeting was held on May 18 . Over 800 ballots were returned , which met our quorum requirements .
Yearly status reports were given on CCC HOA finances , from eight board committees and organizations , the golf company , and the tennis club . It was announced that Kathy Harp , Anne Shevlin and Steve Switzer were all elected to a second , three-year term on the board . Our revised bylaws also passed by a wide margin , with 746 “ Yes ” votes to 32 “ No ” votes . A sad goodbye was said in honor of Judy Brennan , who is leaving the board as she and her husband Mike are moving to northern California . Judy and Mike have had a big impact on Charbonneau the last few years and their leaving is a big loss for our community .
In the Special CCC board meeting that followed the annual meeting , the board filled the empty board seat with Lindy Anderson and welcomed her return to the board . The board elected officers for the 2022-23 year . The elected officers are Gary Newbore , president ; Kathy Harp , vice president ; Pat Tewell , secretary ; and Linda Owen , treasurer . Unfortunately , Pat has now passed away and Lindy Anderson was elected secretary at a special meeting on June 3 . Pat was one of the nicest , kindest people I knew
and she will be significantly missed by our Charbonneau residents . The board also approved its committees and their members for the 2022-23 year and approved the Edith Green Park conceptual plan as provided by our consultant . Physical construction of the plan may be phased over a few years with , hopefully , some development this year .
In the May CCC board meeting the board voted to cover the outdoor tennis courts at the tennis center to create four indoor tennis courts and four indoor pickleball courts . Work is underway and we ’ re acquiring bids from contractors for this project .
In May people started asking why we had multiple RVs parked in the Village Center parking lot . We were putting an asphalt overlay on the RV Center and we needed to make room for RV owners that didn ’ t have room to park at their house or in the nearby street , so we walled off temporary spaces in the Village Center parking lot for them . Rick Schram did a superb job of managing the logistics on this project and we offer a big thanks to the RV owners for their cooperation . We are also hoping that , by the end of the year , you will notice work being done to the exterior of the clubhouse . Replacement of worn siding and windows is planned and funding is in our reserve funds . We are in the planning stage for the actual work .
The move to the Activity Center from the clubhouse generally went well . As with many new
things these days , supply chain issues plus , in our case , operational changes kept General Manager Jim Meierotto ’ s to-do list growing in the first few weeks as various bugs were worked out . I think most of the kinks have been worked out by now though and it is fun to see people using the library , the gathering area ( Hazelglade Room ), and heading to and from the fitness center . Also , we have a new employee , resident Jeanette Winkler . We budgeted this half-time administrative assistant position and she started in early May . She is very energetic and helpful , so please go over and introduce yourself . She is at the front desk in the Activity Center , primarily in the mornings and early afternoons . And we wish a big congratulations to John and Cathi McLain and scores of other volunteers for putting on a fabulous Festival of the Arts , June 3-5 . Over 1,000 people attended .
This has seemed to be a cooler and wetter spring than normal with April being the wettest on record and May falling in the wettest top ten , but I remember , when I was working , two questions always seemed to come up every year . Question one : “ When does summer start ?” Answer : “ July 5 .” And question two : “ What follows two days of rain ?” Answer : “ Monday .” Please have a safe , enjoyable , and patriotic Fourth of July everyone .
