Refl ecting back on board decisions

NEWBORE
Happy New Year everyone . The first of January somehow always signals a fresh start .
It ’ s a time when many of us make New Year ’ s resolutions , which studies show will mostly be forgotten by April . I diet intensely in January . My motto is “ one month of pain for 11 months of gain .”
But it is also a time to look back . A time for reflection . Three years ago this month , in January 2019 , a previous board of directors made a decision to upgrade Charbonneau by building a second clubhouse . While three years is not a long time , it seems like eons ago to me as we have watched this project slowly progress toward our grand opening next month . Only two members on our current board were on the board in January 2019 that made that decision . I ’ m sure the three years have seemed like forever to them as well . We expect this new
“ We expect this new Activity Center , as we are calling it , to open next month .”
Activity Center , as we are calling it , to open next month .
For the sake of repeating myself , one of our board missions and responsibilities here in Charbonneau is to provide activities for our residents . I know a lot of our residents like to put puzzles together and enjoy reading . That is why I am so surprised and somewhat saddened when I mention our CCC library to residents and many residents are unaware of its existence and have never used it . Currently our library is tucked in the back corner of the first room past Jen on the right in the clubhouse . Book checkouts are done through the honor system . Go get a book or puzzle at your leisure and return it when you are done with it . Please also donate books or puzzles from your home if you are done with them . A handful of our resident volunteers sort out the donated materials and put them on shelves .
In our new Activity Center , we will have a much larger and more visible library . It will be the first room on your left when you enter the building . I encourage you to get out of the house , go check out the existing library and visit the expanded , cozy and inviting library in our Activity Center when it opens .
In board actions , the board approved the budget for 2022 , which resulted in a $ 4 per month dues increase . This is much better than the five-plus percent inflation rate from November 2020 to November 2021 .
A Request for Proposals ( RFP ), was issued to two consulting companies to develop a master plan for Edith Green Park . When the proposals are received later this month , the board will select one consultant to do the work . The board also adopted a code of conduct for CCC facilities and criteria for resident input at board meetings . These should be posted in our clubhouse and be on our website shortly . On the asset side of things , preparatory work is underway to improve the marina parking lot which is the first step to replace the docks at the marina and start a paddle club .
Parking
We are looking for volunteers with transportation expertise to help us figure out ways to expand our parking spaces in the Village Center . Please contact Jim Meierotto or Rick Schram if you are interested in helping with this project .
Steve Switzer , Kathi Gray , Sandy Batte , Mary Fieweger , Linda Huber Marshall , Don Mason , Cathi McLain and I , among others , all share something in common . We all write monthly columns for the Villager and sometimes find it a real challenge to find something interesting and yet not repetitive to write about month after month . Many of my ideas come from questions residents ask me . Later it dawns on me that others may have the same question .
So , this may rank among one of the loonier ideas I have had in a while , but I invite you all to send me questions or topics you would like to see me cover . My email is garynewbore @ yahoo . com .
Happy New Year everyone !

Charbonneau golf clubs present 2021 scholarships

There were fi ve scholarship recipients

BY LAURIN LARSEN
Every year , the Charbonneau Men ’ s Club , the women ’ s Niners and CWGA members provide annual scholarships to qualified employees of the Charbonneau Golf Club . Applications are received in September , reviewed by a special committee made up of representatives from each club and the winners are announced in late November .
This year ’ s recipients are Jackson Bensel going to Linfield College ; Samantha Wettstein enrolled at the University of Oregon ; Cole Valin at Oregon State University ; Sarah Hanson at Regis University , and Phil Resch at Montana .
Applications are evaluated by a committee that considers financial need , applicant ’ s goals , outside interests and activities , grades , recommendations and more .
This program is funded by donations from club member donations , club budgeted donations and anonymous donations from the local golf community . The scholarship committee is very grateful for the support and anticipate the program will continue indefinitely .
