“ Looking back over my life , I ’ ve found I ’ m almost always doing something interesting or challenging ,” he recalled . “ I ’ ve hardly ever had a job that didn ’ t fit into one of these categories . It might not have been comfortable , like working in remote areas of Alaska at 65 degrees below zero , but it ’ s always been interesting !”
Residents support wildfire victims
At SpringRidge at Charbonneau , the holidays are synonymous with giving back . Thanks to the active retirement community ’ s maintenancefree lifestyle , residents find they can spend each day as they wish , with many opting to support local charities and organizations .
“ It ’ s really a great time of year to pay it forward ,” said Clair Simmons , who has lived at SpringRidge for almost three and a half years .
He recently spearheaded a clothing
drive , encouraging his neighbors to support victims of the September wildfires that destroyed more than 1 million acres of land .
Widowed in August 2019 , Clair was tasked with deciding what to do with his late-wife ’ s clothing . It was very important for him to find a meaningful way to part with her possessions . Through some research , he learned about Ray of Hope , a thrift store in Woodburn where those affected by wildfires could shop for items free of cost .
“ I had been very concerned about families who had lost everything in the fires ,” he explained . “ Knowing Pat ’ s clothes would have an immediate impact motivated me to support Ray of Hope .”
Despite the donation , Clair , who had lived in the Charbonneau neighborhood for almost 35 years before moving to SpringRidge , wanted to do more to help displaced families . He reached out to SpringRidge ’ s Zest Department to brainstorm how the entire community could come together to provide assistance .
“ At SpringRidge , the Zest team is
