CCC President ’ s Corner

We provide and get service for community

Hello everyone . Wow , it is November already . Where has this year gone ? We start off the month thinking we are going to scream if we
NEWBORE hear one more political ad ; by the middle of the month , we will already be tired of the Christmas ads ; and we wind up the month with Thanksgiving . Although life is not perfect for all of us , we all have much to be thankful for . The theme of this issue is “ Service .” This can be service we give to others or service we receive from others .
Charbonneau residents and clubs have proven over and over how generous we are . Being a largely retired community , we have the time to volunteer for many worthwhile area organizations and many of us do . Many of our organizations are philanthropic as well , including the Niners , Men ’ s Club , CWGA , CWA , Arts Association and Boys & Girls Aid , among others . These groups raise thousands of dollars for various charities and help the lives of our area ’ s youth . And then there are hundreds of us that give service by volunteering for CCC Board positions , Board committees , and for officer or committee positions at our 13 neighborhood HOAs .
I was looking at an old article recently
from the Aurora Airport in which they were crowing about how many jobs they would create if they expanded . I suspect the numbers are somewhat inflated , but they have not made any backup data available , as far as I know . Fellow board member and friend , Steve Switzer , got me thinking about how many jobs we create here in Charbonneau . When you quantify the services that we hire out , from garbage , to landscapers , painters , remodelers , roofers , professional real estate sales agents , electricians , plumbers , our golf course personnel , Village Center business personnel and SpringRidge employees , it is estimated that we generate over 1,000 jobs . Let ’ s just pick one , our garbage company , Republic Services . Yes , we put out our garbage , recyclables and yard debris weekly and see their blue trucks pick up our waste , but don ’ t really give it a second thought . Yet , what would happen if they didn ’ t provide that valuable service ? Or what if we couldn ’ t find a painter , or no plumber would come to fix a leak ? Think about that . Even though the majority of our residents don ’ t work anymore , we are responsible for generating scores of jobs and they are providing us a service .
I am also told that we had the highest voter turnout of any precinct in Oregon in the last election , at 94 % of eligible voters . That is a service to our country . I won ’ t get into politics here , but speaking of two of our community concerns , potential airport expansion and tolling , if you are against these issues , I suggest you find out where our three governor candidates and state legislative candidates stand on them before you vote . There is more on this in Steve Switzer ’ s column in this edition .
In Board and staff actions , we hired a new receptionist at the Activity Center . Claudia Vidal has joined our staff and will
usually be the first person you see when you enter the building . She is warm , bubbly and very friendly . It will take her a while to come up to speed on Charbonneau activities and nuances , but she is a fast learner and you will like her . Please introduce yourselves to her when you come into the building . In other actions , the outdoor tennis courts were resurfaced and are open for play again and were double striped for tennis and pickleball , the sport court at Edith Green Park has had or shortly will have a new light finish applied , and we are hoping to construct two bocce ball courts in the park this fall or winter . Our tennis court building contractor is moving along and has ordered the steel for the project . Tolling continues to be a worry , but we continue to work with ODOT to express our concerns and try to get some answers . ODOT is not releasing any numbers yet , but rumors I have heard indicate that each of us will be paying an average of around $ 1,300 per year to cross the Boone Bridge if we are unable to get the tolling gantries moved elsewhere . That is not fact , just rumors I am hearing from ODOT . My solution is to put tolling gantries on the on and off ramps to I-5 exit 256 ( the state capitol exit )!
ODOT struck another blow to Charbonneau residents when they redesigned our on-ramp north to I-5 and eliminated the exclusive lane into Wilsonville . This poorly thought-out revision is dangerous and has already caused on-ramp traffic accidents to start to pile up ( no pun intended ).
I leave you with these two thoughts . First , I was poor when I was young , but after years of hard work , I am no longer young . Second , as I ’ ve gotten older , I was starting to think I was getting lazy , but it turns out I am just being more energy efficient ! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone .

Solo Sisters

By CANDY FERGUSON

There is much to be grateful for

With Thanksgiving just weeks away , many of us are beginning to reflect on things that
FERGUSON make us
thankful . I have so many things to be thankful for including my wonderful family , my faithful friends in and out of Solo Sisters , a very special church and church family and this fabulous community with its beauty , activities and cherished friendships . In October , prior to publication , Solo Sisters visited the Red Chair Farm in Canby where we spent a fun-filled afternoon painting wine glasses and drinking out of other wine glasses ! I ’ ll tell you all about it in the next issue .
In the meantime , I am thankful that I can choose not to write my Solo Sisters column this month while I take some time to go to California and visit my boys and their families and while I deal with some health issues once I return . I may not want to come back !
See you next month !
