Exit39

EXIT39 seeks to challenge participants to see the world through new eyes, and move from charity to compassion. We’re passionate about seeing individual’s lives changed so that they can in turn go out and change lives.

If you had the opportunity to travel deep into the heart of God, would you be willing to…

step out of your cultural comfort zone?

follow in the footsteps of courageous youth and adults?

understand the plight of the majority of our fellow brothers and sisters who do not have the same choices as you?

test yourself about what you know and don’t know about the poor?

experience for a brief time what many others across the world experience every day?

If so, EXIT39′s poverty simulation is for you.

This unique poverty simulation is designed to help awaken participants to the harsh realities of our world of need, God’s heart for the poor, and how we can better live out God’s call for us to connect with the least, the last, and the lost. The simulation will stretch participants outside of their “comfort zones” to face their own materialism, hidden apathy, cultural biases, and need to refocus on biblical mandates.

Because too much information takes away from the impact of the simulation, there are many details we do not give out ahead of time. EXIT39′s hope is that those participating will return home with new eyes and ears for the needs of the poor and powerless in their own community, nation, and world – and be moved from charity to compassion.

You will be safer than when you’re at the local shopping mall – so let’s just get that out of the way now. There’s nothing dangerous about this. Remember, following

Christ requires everything. You will never be alone.

Simulations begin on Friday at 7:00pm and last until Sunday around 1:00pm in Houston, Texas. Participants must attend the entire simulation. Our short 42 hours of poverty cannot ever compare to the lifetimes of hopelessness suffered by men, women, and children all across the globe. We can, however, try and do something about it – and that’s what the weekend is all about.

Each participant should plan to pack as if he/she were going on any weekend retreat, including a sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, etc.

The church coordinator should collect a Release of Liability and Permission Form (signed by a parent/guardian for students under 18 years of age) and $40 from each participant. Checks should be made out to ‘The Watershed Church’.

The most important items to pack are a good attitude and a teachable heart.

Participants are discouraged from bringing expensive jewelry, excessive money, or electronics – just leave them at home.
