2221 Society Makes a Big Impact for Kids in Crisis

Children’ s Hospital Colorado Foundation’ s 2221 Society was formed eight years ago by like-minded leaders dedicated to transforming children’ s health and supporting the Foundation’ s mission in new ways.
The 2221 Society name honors the early years of Children’ s Hospital Colorado, when a group of nurses providing care in tents in Denver’ s City Park moved their operation into a house at 2221 Downing Street in 1909.
To date, the 2221 Society has raised more than $ 4 million for Children’ s Colorado. Each year, the group considers specific initiatives that need financial support and selects one for their annual fundraising.
Improving Pediatric Mental Health Care Experiences
In 2024, the 2221 Society raised more than $ 700,000 to create a healing mental health environment in our North Campus Emergency Department( ED). Funds contributed to a revamp of the ED’ s mental health intake process and renovation of the space.
Soon, every patient who enters the North Campus ED will receive an initial mental health assessment. Patients arriving for mental health support are directed to specially designed spaces using an approach to care that recognizes the impact of trauma.
“ With a transformed environment and improved patient flow, care providers expect to dramatically reduce patient stays in the ED,” said Austin Akers, Chair and Founding Member of the 2221 Society, CEO of Bison Oil & Gas and Foundation Trustee.“ Thousands of kids and families will benefit from 2221 Society’ s fundraising and our members’ generosity.”

A Lifetime of Giving

In Grateful Memory of Rick Stoddard( 1950-2024)
We mourn the passing of Rick Stoddard, a dedicated and generous member of our community who funded many life-changing programs across the hospital and served as a board member for three decades.
In addition to his unwavering philanthropic support, Rick’ s leadership legacy was marked by his service on the Children’ s Hospital Colorado Foundation Board of Trustees and Executive Committee.
Rick Stoddard
Rick and his wife, Janie, donated generously to several areas in the hospital, specifically those that treated their children. They established the Abby Stoddard Lectureship in Neurology Endowment, which provides an annual lectureship series; the Stoddard Lynch Professorship in pediatric urology; and the Gregor Stoddard Visiting Professorship in Neonatology Endowment, which provides an annual visiting professorship in Neonatology and Maternal Fetal Medicine.
Rick’ s generous lifetime philanthropy exceeded $ 3.2 million, including a legacy gift that honors his passion for Children’ s Hospital Colorado in perpetuity. We are forever grateful for the many blessings Rick brought to countless children and families served by the hospital.
“ Rick’ s devotion to Children’ s Colorado knew no boundaries. His kind and thoughtful spirit is woven into the fabric of the hospital, and his leadership has built a foundation that will carry us forward for many years to come. He will be missed and remembered – always.”
– JENA HAUSMANN, PRESIDENT AND CEO Children’ s Hospital Colorado and the Cille B. and Ronald W. Williams Endowed Chair in Executive Leadership
