HAVE FUN BUT STICK TO THE BASICS
The fundamentals are the foundation of the golf swing for all players from a
beginner to a pro. There are key fundamentals that are needed for the proper
set-up of the swing: grip, alignment, and posture. The set-up is the groundwork
for consistency and control.
GRIP
The grip controls the clubface throughout the swing. It also sets up
the initial start to the swing and causes the player to set the club on
plane and allows the swing to be in balance at the top of the motion.
This setting of the club in the grip supports the coiling of the body
into the right side, setting up the transition of the backswing into
the downswing giving the player the feeling of the club shallowing.
This motion forces the body to unwind into the left side creating a
consistent impact position with a balanced finish at club release.
ALIGNMENT
Alignment is the key in shaping shots. It is determined by proper ball
position and directs the clubface through the ball, controlling ball
flight and trajectory.
POSTURE
Posture is important because it allows the body to rotate correctly
throughout the swing while staying in the proper angles to create the
best result. The key to a great set up is feeling athletic over the ball.
The feeling at address is that the left shoulder and left hip is higher
than the right. This sets your spine angle behind the ball. This is the
preparation to help the body motion during the swing.
The pivot is the body motion of the swing, which controls weight shift, body rotation, and allows for
the club to accelerate through impact. Once you’ve improved your set-up, the plane of your swing will
naturally follow. The club will swing in balance, giving the player the confidence to swing with speed
through impact.
Great golfers have solid fundamentals in all areas of their game. Going back to the basics is the fastest
way to feel, see, and experience improvement in one’s performance. Make it a standard routine to use
much of your practice time to master those fundamentals. Set up for success!
