THE ROAD TO COLLEGE
QUICK GUIDE TO TALKING TO
COLLEGE GOLF COACHES
BY MELISSA SPEK, GGGA COLLEGE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM ADVISOR
It’s September which means a new school year and a new start for our GGGA Student-Athletes.
Student interest and conversations with college coaches are able to start during junior year and
continue through senior year.
Here are three things to consider when having a conversation with a College Golf Coach:
1
hen a Coach says “Keep in touch, let me know how you do.” They really mean it! They want
W
to see how you have played in tournaments and how you communicate, so stay in touch.
When in contact with a Coach, be open and honest...within reason. “Coach, I had great success
on the putting green and made 4 of 5 putts inside 10 feet. I continue to work on dialing in my
accuracy off the tee” is much better than “I couldn’t hit a fairway today, but I’m working on it
and I three putted four times.” It’s all in the delivery!
I f you want to be taken seriously, then you need to be serious and do your research! Take a look
at the website for the school that you’re looking at. Get to know the Coach’s name and their
Assistant’s names. Look at their roster and know how many seniors are graduating. Find out
what Conference they are in and how they placed last year. You should be able to say with all
confidence, “Coach, I know your top individual took 3rd in the Conference Championship, but
your team took 7th. I want to be part of making the team better!”
