ARLINGTON PREPARING TO TRANSITION TO TRASH CARTS IN 2024

The City of Arlington is preparing to transition from manual trash collection to automated trash cart collection in February 2024 , and residents have several opportunities to learn more about the change before it happens .
This plan ’ s development involved a ten-member steering committee collaborating closely with City staff from June to September to organize neighborhood meetings and surveys to gather input from residents . The process included four steering committee meetings , three neighborhood meetings , and two online surveys offered in both English and Spanish . The final meeting , held on August 8 , 2023 , served as the platform for City staff to present the plan recommendations to the neighborhood , which were subsequently approved by attendees .
The plan establishes five core goals :
• Social Capacity : The plan aims to build and formalize neighborhood leadership , fostering community engagement and participation .
• Identity and Branding : Efforts will be made to create a unique neighborhood identity and branding that reflects the area ’ s historical and cultural significance .
• Public Safety : A focus on enhancing public safety measures to ensure residents ’ protection and well-being .
• Property Maintenance : Encouraging residential and business improvements to maintain and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood .
• Development : Planning for the neighborhood ’ s future vision , which encompasses both preservation and sustainable growth .
The neighborhood plan sets forth 61 recommendations that encompass a wide array of strategies and actions for implementation over the next five to ten years . These strategies will uphold the neighborhood ’ s distinct heritage , enhance community well-being , and strengthen civic partnerships .
