CITY CELEBRATES GROUNDBREAKING FOR VOTER-APPROVED ACTIVE ADULT CENTER IN WEST ARLINGTON

The facility is expected to include amenities such as a fullcourt gymnasium that can host sports such as basketball and volleyball , an indoor pool for water exercise and leisure , a fitness area , walking track , multi-purpose rooms for educational programs , events , or passive activities , special events space , an outdoor patio , outdoor pickleball courts , and a community garden . All amenities and program offerings will be determined by final project budget .
“ This is the facility that our active adult population needs and deserves and we are excited to bring it to them ,” Parks and Recreation Director James Orloski said .
“ Beginning with the opening of Meadowbrook Park nearly 100 years ago , Arlington has consistently promoted a high quality of life and championed great parks and recreational opportunities ,” Parks Board Chair Ron Smith said during the ceremony . “ The city ’ s newest recreational facility will offer residents a wide range of opportunities to strengthen both their physical and mental wellbeing ,” he said .
“ The Active Adult Center will serve as a community wellness hub , providing comprehensive programs , services , and spaces that dismantle systemic barriers to health and wellness ,” Smith said .
The City of Arlington offers multigenerational programming at its five recreation centers : Dottie Lynn , Cliff Nelson , The Beacon , Elzie Odom Athletic Center and the East Library and Recreation Center . The Eunice Activity Center also offers programming designed for the senior population and is set to reopen later this year after renovations .
The city continues to invest in neighborhoods throughout The American Dream City , with the Arlington City Council approving nearly $ 145,000 in new Neighborhood Matching Grants for seven projects across the city .
The Neighborhood Matching Grant program was developed in 2007 to foster civic pride , enhance neighborhoods , and encourage collaboration between residents and city government . The program aligns with the City Council priority to Champion Great Neighborhoods .
For a project to be considered , it must be submitted by neighbors , serve a public purpose , have a detailed timeline and meet all city codes . Each neighborhood must also contribute 20 % grant match towards the project through cash , in-kind donations and / or volunteer hours .
The projects selected to receive funding in 2023 include :
• Homeowners Association of River Legacy Estates - $ 18,900 for entryway , lighting and beautification project
• Wildwood Estates Owners Association - $ 14,470 for sidewalk installation and mulch replenish
• Bay Club Homeowners Association – $ 22,150 for Bay Club beautification project
• Glenbury Court Association - $ 7,690 for Glenbury Court entrance improvements
• River Bend - $ 20,500 for neighborhood signage project
• Wimbledon on the Creek Homeowners Association , Inc . - $ 24,400 for Bardin Road landscape improvements
• Creekside Park Residential Association - $ 21,890 for Creekside Park beautification project
• Glen Meadows Owners Association - $ 14,620 for GMC beautification
In total , the city is investing $ 144,620 in neighborhood projects .
