Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau Tips for Attending Business After Hours *Attitude is the key. You have to be friendly and outgoing. * Set a goal for the number of new contacts (or business cards) you will have at the end of the event. *Quickly acknowledge your friends and acquaintances, then set off after those you don’t know. *Rehearse a quick 8-10 word description of your business. Keep your business cards handy, loose in your pocket. *If someone sounds interesting, take his/her card and promise to call the next day. Business After Hours is a time for brief chats, not an hour long sales call. *Use time in food/beverage lines to talk to people. Don’t wait until you’re seated to make contacts. *Get others in your company to go with you, so you can achieve maximum coverage of the room. * Wear a nametag with your first/last name and the company name. A nametag can be a conversation starter. * Keep your membership billing 30 days current, and, you may win the door prize of a pot of dollars and instant fame – and an opening for people to approach you. Remember: Business After Hours are not really social occasions. They are business meetings, requiring a certain degree of calculation to achieve maximum effect on the part of the Members and the Chamber.
