Keep Athens Beautiful The mission of Keep Athens Beautiful is to preserve the natural beauty and environment of Athens. Did you know? • KAB uses the help of volunteers like you to complete dozens of projects each year. Last year, volunteers contributed more than 1,200 hours to improving Athens. • Education is one of KAB’s most important areas. Through a variety of events in Athens schools, we work to teach students the importance of recycling, beautification and litter reduction. • In partnership with the City of Athens, Republic Waste Services, KAB works with the community to encourage curbside recycling. We also host two community cleanups each year. Those cleanups keep more than 5,000 pounds of litter off the street each year, which saves taxpayers around $12,000. • Keep Athens Beautiful has worked to revitalize the historical park on State Highway 19 South, and the organization has made a commitment to maintain the park’s beauty. • The group also maintains the Railroad Park at the corner of North Pinkerton and West Tyler Streets. • Keep Athens Beautiful hosts an annual Eco Camp for children ages kindergarten through fourth grade. The camp teaches children about recycling and beautification in this community. • Using grant funds given by the Governor’s Community Achievement Award (GCAA) program, KAB has beautified the entrances to Athens, planted trees around the area, created a green belt on State Highway 19 South (near Ken’s Pizza), painted railroad trestles, created a beautiful new entrance to the East Texas Arboretum and added bump out on the downtown square. • The efforts of KAB rely on local support. Although the group has completed several major community improvement projects using grant funds, the day-to-day operations of the organization rely on donations to continue. You can give by making a donation or by committing to give an annual amount by adding just a dollar or two to your city of Athens water bill each month. • Who Keeps Athens Beautiful? We do. And we need your help to continue these great efforts. M E M B E R S H I P D I R E C T O R Y 2 0 2 0 2 1
