Athens ISD Athens ISD launches free virtual academy By Toni Garrard Clay AISD Communications Coordinator At Athens ISD, we know every student is unique, with learning styles that best suit their very own talents, needs and hopes for the future. With that in mind, AISD is very excited to launch Athens Virtual Academy. The new academy offers tuition-free, flexible, student-centered, on-line classes for grades 6 through 12. “We’re always looking for ways to serve our students,” said Assistant Superintendent Jami Ivey, who oversees curriculum, instruction and accountability at AISD. “This is an exciting new way to reach those who, for a variety of reasons, may not prefer a traditional classroom setting. And it’s available to sixth- through twelfth-graders across the state, not only students who live within our public school district.” Athens Virtual Academy offers fullyaccredited, on-line courses taught by highly-qualified teachers who help provide a personalized learning experience for every student. Students can learn whenever and wherever works best, with engaging, accredited courses. Athens ISD Virtual Academy is tailored for homeschooling families; advanced students who work through courses rapidly; students who read or learn at a slower pace than their peers; students who want to graduate early; students who need a different learning environment; and students who require a flexible schedule. The academy offers more than 300 accredited courses, such as world languages, fine arts and other electives, advanced placement classes, career and technical education classes, and college and career readiness classes. In addition, Athens Virtual Academy students have the option to participate in extracurricular opportunities and social activities at Athens ISD.
