About The Mighty Moose is the largest mammal found in the North Country. They average 1000 lbs. and stand 6 ft. tall at the shoulder. Moose prefer a diet of aquatic vegetation and can be found“ grazing” in the mud bogs off to the sides of the roads. They can eat 40-60 lbs. of“ browse” daily. Breeding or rutting season lasts from September through October. During this season, the bulls can be aggressive and unpredictable and the cows are easily agitated. Viewing from your vehicle is the least stressful to the moose and the safest for all. Calves are born in the spring and usually stay with their mothers until the next calf is born the following year. Beware – cows are extremely protective of their calves. Moose have a life expectancy of 20 years.

Tips
• Bring your camera and binoculars!
• Do not approach Moose, they are wild animals and should be enjoyed from a distance.
• Do not feed the moose – it is never a good practice to feed wild animals.
• Be patient – you improve your chances of seeing a moose by slowing down and looking around.
• Moose are mostly active at night but can be seen any time of the day.
• Most sightings occur at dusk or dawn.
• Be aware that due to their height and coloring, they do not show up well at night.
• Brake for Moose – Each year nearly 250 moose are killed on New Hampshire highways.
Sighting Locations
BY ATV: Ride the Wilds, the Northeast’ s largest interconnected ATV trail system, delivers 1,000 + miles of trails across Coos County, New Hampshire, and puts you right in the middle of moose country. See page 4 for more info.
BY CAR: Pittsburg to the Canadian Border: The stretch of Route 3 just north of the village and right up to the Canadian border is a popular moose watching spot. Known as“ Moose Alley” – We can almost guarantee at least one moose sighting!
Colebrook to Errol: Route 26 takes you into the neighborhood of the Balsams Grand Resort and deep into moose country. Look out for the Wildlife Viewing Area heading east out of Dixville Notch where you can get out of your car, park and hopefully catch sight of a moose from the viewing lookout.
Errol to Milan: Where Route 16 hugs the Androscoggin River, you’ ll pass through an area known as 13 Mile Woods. If you are really lucky, you may just see a moose swimming across the river, so keep your eyes peeled!
Canaan to Norton, VT: Travel along Route 114. The stretch of road near Lake Wallace is a popular place to see moose as there are bogs and wetlands on both sides of the roadway.
