HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Many artists thrive in our natural landscape that seems to
provide inspiration around every corner. The arts scene is
rising here and these are a few of the people and places
that are helping to make this happen.
Deep roots build great character.
Republic of indian stream
• The Connecticut River Artisans Group (CRAG) is a
collection of artists and artisans of various mediums that
exhibit their works at local events, locations, and at their
gallery within Fiddleheads – A Great North Woods Shoppe
on Main Street in Colebrook. Learn more at

In 1832 the settlers of the area between Indian Stream and Hall
Stream, claimed by both Canada and the United States, set up
the independent republic of Indian Stream. Yielding to New
Hampshire in 1836, Indian Stream became part of Pittsburg
and in 1842 was recognized by the United States territory.
• The Great North Woods Committee for the Arts
(GNWCA) has been influential in creating accessibility to
high quality music with a myriad of genres to the northern
regions of New Hampshire (see ad below).
dixville notch “First in the Nation”

Since 1960, Dixville has been the first community in the state
and country to cast its handful of votes in national elections.
On election eve, 100% of the eligible voters gather in the
ballot room of The BALSAMS as midnight polls open and a few
minutes later promptly close. The results are broadcast around
the world.

• The Tillotson Center, northern New Hampshire’s top
spot for community heritage, visual and performing arts, is
tucked into the center of Colebrook. Formerly the carriage
barn for the Balsam’s stagecoach and later a grange hall,
this historic building has been completely transformed.
Today it features a 171-seat theater for films, lectures,
concerts, and plays. In addition, it houses a museum annex
for the Colebrook Historical Society and an art gallery for
local artists to display their works. The center also can
be rented for business meetings, weddings, receptions,
reunions, and other events.
The poore farm historic homestead
and museum
(629 Hollow Road, Route 145, Stewartstown, NH)
A historical homestead and settlement portraying one’s life
from the 1830’s to the 1990’s. The house, barns, and outbuildings hold a large collection of historical clothing, artifacts,
newspapers, magazines, diaries and letters from the civil war to
present, tools, horse drawn wagons, farming implements and a
collection of everyday items.
• The Carriage Lane Players are a non profit community
theater group bringing live theater to the North Country.
