On behalf of Custer residents , I officially welcome you to Custer . We encourage you to embrace the history , nature , and adventure that Custer has to offer .
Custer ’ s history is unique . In 1874 , General George Custer and Horatio Ross first discovered gold in French Creek just outside of Custer . Thousands of people rushed to the area to find the treasure .
Soon after in 1875 , Custer City was founded . Over the years , Custer has grown to around 2,000 residents . Not only did people come to find treasure in 1874 but now come to see the greatest landmarks in the Black Hills that are just minutes away . Here , you can enjoy taking a nature hike up to Black Elk Peak , which is the highest point between the Rockies and the Pyrenees Mountains , or a scenic drive to Mount Rushmore National Memorial or Custer State Park . Custer State Park has the world ’ s largest publicly owned herd of bison .
The bison and other wildlife can be seen by taking a journey through the wildlife loop . You can also experience the 109-mile Mickelson Trail by horseback riding , biking , or walking . The trail starts in Deadwood , takes you past Crazy Horse Memorial , and finishes in Edgemont with 15 trailheads along the way .
Whether you are on foot , a bike or in a car , Custer offers opportunities to experience the history and discover the treasure within the Black Hills .
