Recently, the Pew Research Center conducted
an in-depth study of the American Jewish
community. The survey covered a wide
array of subjects, including Jewish identity,
religious beliefs and practices, attitudes
towards Israel, and intermarriage, among
other issues. I encourage you to review
the complete report, “A Portrait of Jewish
Americans,” at www.pewforum.org/

One of the questions the Pew Center asked
was “What is essential to being Jewish?” Of note, “being part of a Jewish
community” ranked 7th of 9 responses, right after “having a good sense of
humor,” which ranked 6th. “Remembering the Holocaust” ranked 1st, and
“leading an ethical and moral life” ranked 2nd.
These are just some of the intriguing results of the study.
The Pew Center report separates Jews into two categories: The first category
is Jews by religion, those who say their religion is Jewish (and who do not
profess any other religion); the second category is Jews of no religion, those
who describe themselves as atheist, agnostic or nothing in particular, but who
have a Jewish parent or were raised Jewish and who still consider themselves
Jewish in some way.
The survey contains a gold mine of data about the American Jewish
community.
