PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT:
College of Visual and Performing Arts
The Visual and Performing Arts program offers a dynamic range of degree options designed to engage students creatively while preparing them for successful careers in their chosen fields. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts( BFA) in Dance, or a Bachelor of Arts( BA) in Music with concentrations such as Voice or Trumpet, Theatre Arts with a focus on Technical Theatre or Visual Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design. Each program combines artistic rigor with practical experience, fostering both talent and professional readiness. Notably, the BFA in Dance stands out as the only full four-year undergraduate dance program at any Historically Black College or University( HBCU) in the nation. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, it has become a leading destination for students of color seeking comprehensive training in dance.
Set for Success:
Over four years, Dance majors receive instruction in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, African, Hip Hop, Tap, Composition, Dance Production and many other course tracks. It’ s a rigorous program, but graduates also benefit from the rigor when they enter the professional world of Dance as performers and educators.
Professional Insights:
“ Our program is streamlined and rigorous, requiring hard work. No BFA / Dance major who is fully engaged would say otherwise. However, they also would agree that it is fun, exciting and challenging. It fosters a sense of freedom and adventure, along with many other factors that keep them engaged,” said Mr. James R. Atkinson, Director of BFA / Dance Program.
Making an Impact:
BFA / Dance graduates have had a significant impact on youth training and education. From teaching at local schools to opening studios that offer top-level foundational and advanced classes and performances, graduates understand the impact Dance can have in the community.

A Student’ s Perspective:
“ When I discovered ASU’ s BFA / Dance Program, my heart started racing! I never imagined I could study what I truly love at an HBCU and earn a degree. To my tremendous blessing, not only did I earn my degree, but I also made wonderful friends, received top-notch professional training and gained the confidence to pursue a full career in Dance. Now, I’ m living out one of my dreams as a principal dancer at Dallas Black Dance Theatre. I wouldn’ t trade my ASU experience or Dance degree for all the pointe shoes in the universe!” said Jazmun McCoy, BFA / Dance Graduate.
