2020 # ALPINETXPHOTO CONTEST

The City of Alpine has announced the winners of the 2021 # AlpineTXPhoto Contest . Free and open to the public , the contest closed to entries on September 30th . The eleventh annual photo contest saw 400 photographs entered by 119 photographers .
Photographers throughout the region and beyond were asked to capture the city of Alpine in a personal , reflective way to reveal the personality of the area . The contest judge for 2021 was Rachael Waller . All entered photographs are submitted anonymously to the judge , who is given only their title and a random ID number .
Rachael Waller is a fine art photographer specializing in equine , landscape , western life and music . She moved to Alpine in 1994 . She has a B . F . A and M . F . A in film from the esteemed California Institute of the Arts .
“ It has been my extreme pleasure to judge the Alpine photo contest ,” said Waller . “ It was very hard to pick favorites as all the images were an impressive display of our beautiful town , community , and lifestyle . I wish there were more awards as I would have had the privilege of awarding more .
“ Honestly , in my book , everyone deserves an award for being out there taking photographs ,” she continued . “ It isn ’ t always easy to enter a photo contest and to be judged by it . A huge kudos to all who entered .
“ There were so many great images , moments and lovely depictions of our town . It all came down to those spontaneous moments when the photo is taken at just the right time , including the light , texture , contrast , how an image evokes an emotion .”
The H . L . Kokernot , Jr . Memorial Award , which includes a $ 500 cash prize , was won by Lori Reynolds ’ “ Beneath the Light .” Waller said about the image , “ Such a beautiful capture . There were so many awesome elements that scream Alpine with rain I had to choose it . It is a shot that we all pray for when it comes to rain and our love of our beautiful area .”
The Charles Henry Trost Memorial Award ( with a $ 100 cash award ) was 2020 # AlpineTXPhoto Contest Judge David Winslow ’ s “ Sunday Morning Dusty Pronghorn .” Waller commented , “ The layers and levels here are just incredible . Between the dust , light , contrast and the single Pronghorn it really invited me to gaze longer . Such an incredible shot of timing and I am sure patience .”
The remaining contest winners were “ Love is in the Air ” by Nicola Gell , “ The Guardian ” by Cheyenne Marta , and “ Sunshine ” by Vicki LeBlanc , all receiving $ 50 cash prizes .
