Rani Birchfield is a writer at large in the Big
Bend region. Born in Kathmandu, she inherited
the wanderlust of her parents and loves travel,
food and wine exploration, and meeting odd

Billie Farrington Birnie has been writing most
of her life, starting with terrible poems in ele-
mentary school (in Balmorhea, Texas), continu-
ing as editor of her college newspaper (in
Alpine, Texas) and society editor of the Pecos
Enterprise (in Pecos, Texas), improving during a
fifty-year career in education (in Austin, Texas,
and Miami, Florida), and thriving in retirement
(first in Alpine and now in San Angelo, Texas,
with her husband Richard). Her published writ-
ing ranges from memoir and poetry to articles

Pamela R. Gumina began her photography
career in Colorado where she was born and
raised. She is returning to her love of telling a
story through pictures, first started at Adams
State College in the Rocky Mountains. The Big
Bend is an ideal scenery for her to hone those
skills. When she is not out “shooting,” you may
find her at the Big Bend Regional Medical

Marv Holcome is a retired electrical engineer,
born and raised in South Dakota. He graduated
with an aerospace engineering degree from the
University of Texas. He and his wife, Donna,
have been married 51 years. They enjoy visits
with two sons and four grandsons at their cabin
at the Davis Mountains Resort. Much of
the inspiration for his poems comes from

Judy Eron has lived for 25 years in the off-the-
grid house she helped build on Terlingua Ranch.
She and her partner Charlie are two-thirds of
“The Terlingua Fill-Harmonic Symphony” that
entertains there. They escape the desert heat by
migrating yearly to the ocean in Washington
state where their band “Double J and the Boys”
performs. She is the author of What Goes Up:
Surviving the Manic Episode of a Loved One.
