Mount Auburn Cemetery was founded in 1831 on the same ideology that is found in the natural burial movement today . Jacob Bigelow , one of Mount Auburn ’ s founders , fervently and eloquently wrote about the natural process of decomposition :
“ The elements which have once moved and circulated in living frames do not become extinct nor useless after death : they offer themselves as the materials from which other living frames are to be constructed .”
